From Dairy Cows to Green Consumerism
Today, as I was reading for work about precautionary consumption, my mind kept trailing to this lovely dairy farm beside Wendy's Mobile Market that we visited on the weekend, near Kingston. If you must know, green consumerism or precautionary consumption is where it is the responsibility of the consumer to buy well and make "safe choices" rather then, say, the government to regulate what's available and what's produced.
There are lots of examples of this, like the campaign against BPA (Bisphenol A) which is used in hard, reusable plastic bottles (like nalgenes), baby bottles and the lining of aluminum cans. Many of us know about it, the problem is, we're still being exposed to it. So why is it still on the market? What about the people working in the manufacturing facilities? Why would we export something harmful to others? And when you excrete it out, where do you think it goes?
Not all of us have access to the information or the means to buy as a green consumer, in the end is it not better to have some food than not enough food? When you start to think about the fact that it's not just about food, it's about just about everything that you consume, eat, drink, breathe, put on your skin, put near your skin... Best not to loop around that one too long, eh?
Let's think about Wendy's Mobile Market again, because that was a nice place. Perhaps not local for us, this place greatly supports its local farms, offering to deliver goods directly to the surrounding area. If you're ever in the area, you should check them out, or check out their website here.
