St-Henri, the 26th of August

(2011)
NFB/ONF & Shannon Walsh

A friend bought me a ticket (thank you!) to see this film yesterday, featured at the Hot Docs Festival. Check out more Hot Docs listings and information at http://www.hotdocs.ca/

Here is the trailer:

This is a lovely film involving the collaborative efforts of over a dozen filmakers, who each went around on the same day to film members of the St. Henri community, in southwestern Montreal, on the 26th of August. The film is at times quite comical and the characters really tell and show their own story. It is set on the first day of school.

Visually, it represents Montréal in a beautiful but sad way, as it depicts a community that crumbled as industries abroad forced a number of factories to shut down in the area, leaving many member of the community unemployed and buildings abandoned.

The film itself was inspired by À Saint-Henri le cinq septembre by Hubert Aquin (1962, 41 minutes), which is available to watch online on the National Film Board website here.

This is a great time to present the NFB who hold a tremendous amount of content online. Instead of watching that TV show you're thinking of watching, I recommend you check out all the films posted on the NFB website. See it here: http://www.nfb.ca/
